1. Introduction
The IMCA Security Committee is determined to raise awareness of security issues that can potentially harm member companies. Information provided in this regular Security Bulletin is intended to be used by members to either directly pass on to employees or use the material it contains as part of an existing company security awareness programme.
2. Cyber security
On 23 December 2019, Maastricht University found itself the victim of a significant cyber-attack, although not marine related lessons can still be learnt..
The Be cyber aware at sea website is recognised as a useful tool to assist in raising awareness. Each IMCA security bulletin refers the reader to one of the Be cyber aware at sea poster and video campaigns, this bulletin it is ‘Be Cyber Aware at Sea.’ Download the poster here.

Gulf of Mexico
Recent acts of armed robbery have been reported off the coast of Mexico, a member company informed us of the following recent activity:
- Wednesday 8 April, the Sapura 3500, attempted boarding by armed persons.
- Sunday 12 April, Maersk Transporter robbery incident.
- Monday 13 April, REMAS saturation dive vessel attacked for the second time in less than five months, two injured and four bullet impacts on ship’s main deck.
- Tuesday 14 April, Telford 28 was robbed by armed persons, one crew member wounded by gun fire.
- Thursday 16 April, Bucanner was attacked.
Gulf of Guinea
A reminder that OCIMF recently published Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security off the Coast of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea (BMP WA). IMCA fully supports and recommends the publication which is available here.
Middle East
OCIMF have a Merchant Navy Liaison Officer (MNLO) at the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) in Dubai.
