Chris Lemons to share his survival story immortalised by Netflix, at IMCA Global Summit

Published on 18 June 2024

We are delighted to announce that Chris Lemons will be the keynote safety speaker at the IMCA Global Summit in Utrecht, Netherlands on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 December 2024.

He’ll be sharing his survival story, immortalised in the critically acclaimed Netflix/BBC documentary Last Breath, which is being developed into a Hollywood movie starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Finn Cole.

Chris Lemons said: “I’m delighted to be joining delegates at this year’s IMCA Global Summit in Utrecht. Our story is a real-life reminder of the importance of IMCA’s mission and the safety challenges of working offshore, and it will be a huge personal honour to be able to share what happened that day with the audience of offshore professionals and safety experts.“

Chris is currently an IMCA Closed Bell Diving Supervisor, having been a commercial diver for over 18 years, and currently specialises in deep sea saturation diving. This highly specialised form of diving involves living in the confines of a decompression chamber for up to 28 days at a time, commuting daily to the seabed in a diving bell, and working at depths of up to 900 feet in six-hour shifts.

In September 2012, an unexpected failure of the Dynamic Positioning (DP) system of the vessel he was working under, resulted in the umbilical which provides him with air, light and heat being severed completely, leaving him on the seabed, in complete darkness, 300 feet below the surface. With only five minutes of air left in the emergency tanks on his back, he was stranded with no way to protect himself from the freezing temperatures.

It took his rescuers over 40 minutes to come back and fetch him, and his miraculous survival story has baffled experts ever since.

The outline programme of the IMCA Global Summit has been announced with sessions on the economic outlook, sustainability, people, and safety. Chris Lemons’ keynote will take place on day two of the Conference, Wednesday 4 December.
